This spring brought a bit of warm rain and a great class! As always, I met great students with different skill sets and life experiences. I always try to find out who students are, what they have done in the past, and try to help them as best as I can when they are in my class to be successful. Right at the beginning of my class and as I began to silently gauge each student I began to notice the sense of humor of a few students. As the class progressed I noticed the overall positive effect that this brought to myself (of course stressed) and to the class as a whole. Maybe it was luck or maybe it was due to βbreaking the iceβ by a few students but this class overall was full of positivity, laughter, and kindness. Students were determined, thankful, reflective, and so much fun.

After all of the rain and wind we were thinking that this course would be canceled but in the end, the weather held out just enough to get in one day of diving! This was the first course in which all of my students were just visiting Maui so canceling or trying to reschedule due to weather would not have been good. On the day of our open water session, I was just as happy to see the blue sky my students were. We shared struggles throughout this two-day course and in the end, we shared drinks and laughs in celebration. Good work students! Once again it is so wonderful to meet new people and see them progress from the beginning of this course to the end.
DECEMBER 2018
Such a great way to end the year! These three students were blessed with nice weather and clear water. All three students showed up with dive experience and it showed in the water.
All of us have our own strengths and and our challenges. With the skill sets that students bring to this course sometimes challenges have presented themselves immediately to them and other times students find/create them as they attempt to βfine tuneβ their newly learned freediving skills. Whichever one it ends up being I always tell students that they βCANβ because I believe it. We all have the ability to conquer our challenges and can do so with time and practice.
All students during this December had a challenge to work on. They all worked toward conquering it and they did conquer it! Congrats! (More pics coming soon..)
Another awesome class with great people! People from different places and with different skill sets all met at one point of time together to learn to freedive at Composure Freediving. I saw each studentβs strengths shining through as he/she progressed through the course and watched them become better divers. Some of the skills that I saw among this class of five from the beginning were form, comfortably, strong and controlled kicks, and adaptability. Everyone was positive, wanted to learn, and helped each other during times of need. Congrats to all of you!
Its amazing to see how much progress students can make in this two day course. I always start by asking my students what they hope to accomplish by the end of my course. Having these conversations with them allows me to get a better understanding of who they are, what obstacles they may have to overcome during this course, and what I might need to do to better help them. Its always a joy to see the smiles of accomplishment.
